HARTFORD, Conn. Andrew Hillier hit a rare two-run sacrifice fly in the second inning, then belted a three-run homer during a seven-run third inning as the University of Southern Maine opened its NCAA Division III baseball tournament regional with a 17-2 win Thursday against Johnson & Wales.
Top-seeded USM (32-9) next plays at 2:30 p.m. Friday against the loser of Thursday’s late game between Wheaton (Mass.) and Salve Regina.
Also, the University of Southern Maine baseball team routs UMaine-Farmington.

LEWISTON The Bates College softball team lost both games of a doubleheader in its first games at Lafayette Street Field since April 28, 2019.
St. Joseph’s (4-4) won the opener 6-2 and the second game 6-1.
The Monks ended a scoreless stalemate in first game with a five-run fourth inning, which was aided by three hits and three Bates errors. Lydia Howarth brought in Hannah Gower for the first run with a bases-loaded single.
Caroline Bass and Aleah Pagan, who had two hits, scored unearned runs for the Bobcats (0-4) in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 5-2.
