Bosson s emotional Belle tribute

Link to Share Opie Bosson knows the time is right for Melody Belle to stop racing. But it didn’t mean he wasn’t affected by it. Melody Belle ended her racing career at the weekend when finishing fifth in Bosson’s hands in the Gr.1 Doomben Cup (2000m), finishing as well as anything behind the runaway winner Zaaki. She was subsequently sold at auction for A$2.6 million to the Written Tycoon Syndicate. Bosson rode Melody Belle in 16 of her 40 starts, scoring nine wins and three minor placings. He was unbeaten on her in eight starts and was sad he wouldn’t partner her again.

Mai Tai gets deserved black-type victory at Awapuni

Peter rubery/race images Promising mare Mai Tai has added to her burgeoning race record with victory in the listed Manawatu Anzac Mile at Awapuni on Sunday. Progressive mare Mai Tai added another feather to her cap when she picked up her first victory at stakes level with a win in the listed Manawatū Anzac Mile over 1600 metres at Awapuni. Sent out a warm favourite ($2.60) for the race in Palmerston North on Sunday, punters never had a moment of concern courtesy of a picture-perfect ride by Sam Collett, who collected her second black-type victory for the weekend after taking out the group 2 Easter Handicap (1600m) at Ellerslie aboard Demonetization on Saturday.

Outsider Robusto denies Aussie raider to win Avondale Cup

Robusto (inner) holds out Sound in the Avondale Cup at Ellerslie on Saturday. Rugged stayer Robusto ($39) upset the applecart when she produced a well-timed finish to deny Aussie raider Sound a victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Avondale Cup (2400m) at Ellerslie. The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained six-year-old shrugged off a disappointing run in the Wellington Cup (3200m) at her last start to thrust her name into Auckland Cup (3200m) contention as she overcame traffic problems in the home straight to claim her biggest career victory. Given a perfect run in the trail by rider Sam Collett, the daughter of Zed tracked Sound into the race on the home corner before shooting through on his inner at the 200m.

New Zealand jockey Danielle Johnson made it 1000 winners on Wednesday at Te Aroha

New Zealand’s leading rider Danielle Johnson recorded her 1000 winner in her homeland when guiding Feelin’ Fancy to victory in the opening race on Wednesday at Te Aroha. Johnson and the Jamie Richards-trained mare came from well back, storming down the centre of the track to score by two lengths in the Apparelmaster Waikato Maiden (1400m). Johnson became the third New Zealander to achieve the feat in her homeland following on from Lisa Allpress and Trudy Thornton while trailblazer Lisa Cropp rode more than 1000 winners also but many of them were in Australia. “What people are saying to me makes me realise what a big achievement it is,” Johnson told NZ Racing Desk prior to Wednesday’s meeting.
