PLANS to build a coal mine in Cumbria have caught the attention of one of the world s leading climate change experts. In a letter to Brois Johnson, ex-NASA scientist James Hansen said that failure to stop the mine from going ahead at Whitehaven would be in contemptuous disregard for the future of young people and nature. The new facility, which will be used to extract coking coal for steel production, has been granted planning permission by Cumbria County Council. The Government said in January that it would not call in the plans for an inquiry. Readers of the News and Star reacted strongly to the story - many were angered by the intervention.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Getting high school students involved in politics to solve world problems is just one of the goals of a program between the U.S. and Ireland.
Eighteen students at Blacksburg High School are paired with the same number from Ireland for Bridge the Pond. The kickoff event was Wednesday. Over the next three weeks, they’ll work in small groups to research world problems and their ideas to solve them.
“Some of the things I thought were interesting and would like to discuss are racial justice, climate activism, social media and mental health issues,” said Caoilainn Chistensen, a 10th-grade student.

Professional disinformation campaigns are a
boom market, according to a new report from the Oxford Internet Institute (OII); researchers found “evidence of 81 countries using social media to spread computational propaganda and disinformation about politics,” up from 70 in 2019. Among them: Both sides of the civil war in Libya, a pro-Trump group that tries to convince ageing boomers he’s popular with college students, and failed billionaire candidate for the presidency Michael Bloomberg.
