Officials made the announcement after the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services ordered that masks are no longer required outside unless at a gathering of 100 or more people. Face masks are still required at indoor locations on campus, however, MSU President Samuel Stanley told Fox 17, We are all looking forward to the summer, warmer weather and a chance to recharge. Masks are no longer required outside unless a gathering has 100 or more people, according to a Monday, May 10 message to the MSU community from President Samuel Stanley, who cited an order from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The change is for outdoor areas only. Face coverings are still required while indoors or in MSU-affiliated properties, Stanley said. The University of Michigan announced a similar change on May 7. after the state relaxed its COVID-19 rules on masking outdoors to encourage outdoor activities. According to the order, masks are “generally” no longer required, and anyone who is fully vaccinated and not experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms is not required to wear a mask at residential gatherings,

Philanthropist and entrepreneur Eli Broad, who contributed millions of dollars to Michigan State University, died Friday at age 87, representatives announced. Since 1999, Broad, who founded two Fortune 500 companies in different industries, and his wife, Edythe, had committed more than $5 billion with their foundations to support K-12 public education, scientific and medical research, and the visual and performing arts.  In 2014, Broad and his wife gave MSU a $25 million challenge grant to broaden the scope of the Eli Broad College of Business. The gift brought the Detroit Public Schools alumni s total giving to MSU to nearly $100 million. As a businessman Eli saw around corners, as a philanthropist he saw the problems in the world and tried to fix them, as a citizen he saw the possibility in our shared community, and as a husband, father and friend he saw the potential in each of us,” said Gerun Riley, president of The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation.
