San Diego s high-speed rail plan hinges on urban density as population growth wanes

Print Two hundred miles of high-speed rail carrying electric trains moving twice as fast as the region’s trolley system. A dozen new stations, including massive hubs near the downtown airport and the Tijuana border. That’s the backbone of a recently released $160-billion blueprint aimed at making public transit as fast as driving a car which elected officials from across the San Diego region are preparing to discuss Friday. Experts largely agree the plan’s long-term success would hinge on whether cities can usher in dense urban development around transit stations, at a time when birth rates in San Diego and throughout California are declining as overall population growth has all but come to a halt.

Will San Diego s High-Speed Rail Survive Slow Urban Growth?

The two hundred miles of high-speed railway rely upon dense urban growth around transit stations to achieve long-term success. But as California and San Diego birth rates and population decline, some worry it’s too costly a risk.

New San Marcos restaurant, brewery and gathering spot aims for the family crowd

san marcos    Two years ago, longtime business partners Mark McLarry and Jamie Minotti sat down with some drawing paper and a couple of beers and mapped out their dream project. It would be a combination craft brewery, fast-casual restaurant and live music venue where both adults and families with small children would be welcome. On Thursday morning, that dream was well on its way to reality, when the San Diego men held the official groundbreaking for My Yard Live, which is scheduled to open by July 4 in the long-shuttered Hometown Buffet restaurant in San Marcos. The long-gestating project will have 10,000 square feet of indoor space for the 20-barrel brewery; an indoor music stage; a walk-up restaurant counter serving smoked meats, burgers and other American comfort foods; a full-service, 36-seat indoor/outdoor bar; a 25-seat private dining room; a video game arcade with table tennis and air hockey games; and multiple seating configurations.
