Before starting iconic winery, couple brought research expertise to Spokane medical community

Dr. Harold and Marcia Mielke stand on the grounds at Arbor Crest Winer Cellars, which they started with family in the early 1980s. Dr. Harold and Marcia Mielke have spent their lives with feet planted in both the medical and winery worlds. The couple have contributed indispensable medical research, and they co-founded of one of Spokane’s oldest wineries, Arbor Crest Wine Cellars. They met at San Francisco General Hospital in 1963, where Harold, now 84, was interning, and Marcia, now 80, was working as a nurse in pediatrics. The two will celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary this July.

Patricia Lee sells bouquets of flowers at a stand near 4th and Market streets. Before the attacks, she said she noticed a man holding a knife on his right side. The knife is pretty wide, she said. It looked like an army knife. I called my nephew and I say, Hey, you know what? This guy has a knife. Something is going to happen.
Still, despite the announcement, questions swirled about how Spalding – a British native who worked in hospitality sales – could have ended up in a remote stairwell on the fourth floor. Spalding had entered the hospital on Sept. 19 with a urinary tract infection, and was last seen on Sept. 21. A friend said she had been feeling disoriented on her medication, but a doctor on Wednesday said her condition had been improving. We have no idea how this happened, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Todd May. We are shaken to our core. What happened at the hospital is horrible. Our staff is devastated.”
Hospital staff and sheriff s deputies took no questions from reporters, and did not explain the circumstances of her death, including the timing until Tuesday morning when she was found by a member of the engineering staff on a routine check – 17 days after she walked off from her hospital room. Two Asian women were standing at a bus stop in downtown San Francisco on Tuesday evening when a man approached, stabbed them both and then calmly strolled away. He walked away like nothing happened, like Sunday morning, Patricia Lee, who was working at a flower stand near the attack, told KGO-TV.
Two hours later, San Francisco police arrested a 55-year-old man in the attack, which sent both victims to the hospital, according to San Francisco police. One victim, an 85-year-old woman, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center to undergo surgery.
