The road trip from Denver to Las Vegas is a classic road trip for Coloradans – a rite of passage, even. But a straight shot to Vegas isn’t the only way to do it. Find joy in the journey, when you turn the popular Mile High-to-Sin City drive into an adventurous loop.
On the way to Vegas, make a few fun stops at Breckenridge, Grand Junction and Cedar City. Then, after leaving the neon lights of Las Vegas, loop south so you can hit Lake Havasu, Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, Telluride, Crested Butte and the Buena Vista hot springs, before returning back to Denver.

While Flagstaff and the surrounding region received about 2 feet of snow in recent days, many areas of the Peaks got more than double that amount. Some high-elevation snowdrifts could even measure two meters. It was the first major accumulation on the Peaks after a long dry spell, and local avalanche experts say there’s now a high degree of uncertainty for avalanche and other backcountry hazards. Anytime you get a significant amount of snow that raises your concerns, says James Foulks, an executive board member of the Kachina Peaks Avalanche Center. What’s unique about this situation is there was no snowpack, or almost no snowpack, on most all aspects of the mountain prior to this storm.

Pozzolans are a class of silica- and aluminum-rich materials commonly derived from explosive volcanic deposits. The early Romans knew of their value, incorporating them into aqueducts and buildings. The word
pozzolan comes from a town in Italy.
Added to Portland cement, pozzolan reacts with hydrated lime. It’s beneficial because it replaces some of the cement that’s needed in the concrete end product. And it creates a more durable, long-lasting concrete that’s less permeable to water a desirable quality in materials used for dams, bridges, and canal linings.
From the late 1950s into the early 1960s, pozzolan was mined in the volcanic field near Flagstaff and used as a key additive to the concrete for Glen Canyon Dam. When that source played out, Sugarloaf Mountain on the San Francisco Peaks was also tapped.
