REDWOOD CITY, CA Convicted killer Scott Peterson will return to court in June for two new hearings, one on the penalty phase of his murder conviction and a second to petition for a retrial following allegations of juror misconduct in his original trial.
San Francisco Superior Court Judge Anne-Christine Massullo on Tuesday set a June 28 hearing date on the penalty phase in a hearing in San Mateo County Superior Court. Peterson appeared via Zoom from San Quentin State Prison and waived his rights to a speedy trial for the penalty phase.

The news itself was crushing. A 7-month-old baby boy named Synciere Williams died Tuesday. The man charged with taking care of him that day, Joseph Williams, 26, was booked by police for allegedly murdering the child. And, it turned out, he’d been arrested twice recently on suspicion of felony domestic violence, in January and March, before being released without charges.

San Francisco public defenders are beginning to mount legal challenges to evidence handled by Justin Volk, the former Medical Examiner’s Office lab analyst now facing charges for allegedly stealing drugs from his workplace.
In the last week, defense attorneys in two pending DUI cases argued before San Francisco judges that Volk’s 2020 methamphetamine arrest and pending cases should be admissible in trial. Such information could be used to shred Volk’s credibility.
