Police arrested a San Diego man on suspicion of murder in the shooting death of a man earlier this month in a La Mesa shopping center parking lot, a sergeant said Monday.
Detectives arrested 20-year-old Alexander Cesar Nghiem on Friday outside his San Diego residence, according to La Mesa police Sgt. Dan Herrin.

Nghiem is accused of shooting and killing 29-year-old Escondido resident Di’Marcus Lavonne Mayes on Dec. 11, Herrin said in a news release.

The shooting happened around 9:35 p.m. in the Marketplace at Lake Murray Village parking lot on Lake Murray Boulevard near Aztec Drive and Cowles Mountain Boulevard.

Police on Thursday arrested a 27-year-old Texas man on suspicion of attempted murder and arson in connection with the stabbing of a woman who was discovered Sunday morning inside a burning motel room, authorities said.
Detectives and officers arrested Jeremiah Dayvon King after spotting him Thursday afternoon walking along Oxford Street near Third Avenue in Chula Vista, National City police Capt. Alex Hernandez said. King attempted to flee before law enforcement took him into custody.
The stabbing and fire occurred around 3 a.m. Sunday at the Roadway Inn on Roosevelt Avenue just off Interstate 5, according to Hernandez. Before firefighters and police arrived, other motel guests rescued the wounded woman and extinguished the fire.

A 69-year-old man was behind bars today on suspicion of driving drunk and killing a highway worker on state Route 94 in Jamul, the highway patrol reported.
The victim was struck shortly before 9:55 p.m. Wednesday on westbound state Route 94 near Cougar Canyon Drive, California Highway Patrol Officer Travis Garrow said.
Arnold Lee Patton of San Diego was driving a 1996 Lincoln Town Car when he went through a coned-off, active construction zone and struck the 27-year-old worker, Garrow said.

A 43-year-old San Diego County inmate who died in October after collapsing in a jail recreation yard died of a medical issue brought on by natural causes, authorities reported Tuesday.
Anthony Chon collapsed around 7 a.m. on Oct. 16 in a recreation yard at the downtown San Diego Central Jail and died a short time later at a hospital, according to sheriff’s officials.
Chon is also identified as Anthony Chom in court records. His death, along with those of several other inmates within a span of a few weeks, was first reported last month by The San Diego Union-Tribune.
