Fernando Tatis Jr. cites shoulder in passing up Derby invitation

As badly as Fernando Tatis Jr. wants to join this year s Home Run Derby festivities, the San Diego Padres star shortstop said Friday that he has to focus on bigger priorities namely, his health in turning down the opportunity.
The 22-year-old Tatis is tied for third in the majors with 22 homers, a figure that also has him tied for National League lead, and he s likely a shoo-in to be in Denver as the starter at short for the All-Star Game on July 13.
Citing a continuing injury concern to his left shoulder, however, Tatis will not take part in the Derby on July 12 at Coors Field, a stadium famous for allowing many home runs.

San Diego – Right-hander Yu Darvish tossed seven strong innings but was tagged with the loss Wednesday after getting little offensive support in the San Diego Padres’ 3-1 defeat to the Chicago Cubs.
In his 13th start this season, Darvish (6-2) struck out eight, while allowing two runs on three hits and two walks against his former club at Petco Park. The hits included a game-tying solo homer to Joc Pederson in the fourth inning.

San Diego’s Mitek Systems, a maker of mobile check deposit and identity verification technology for financial services firms, has acquired a biometrics startup in a stock and cash transaction valued at $49 million.
The acquisition of New York-based ID R&D gives Mitek face- and voice-based identification capabilities to integrate into its Mobile Verify, Mobile Deposit and other apps.
The two companies already had been working together for a couple of years, said Sanjay Gupta, Mitek’s vice president of product and corporate development. ID R&D’s technology helps Mitek determine “liveness” in selfie photos submitted as part of the Mobile Verify process pinpointing whether a submitted selfie is real or a photo-of-a-photo from a fraudster.
