Opinion: Our homeless outreach teams begin by building trust. Here's how they do it.

Roberts is the chief executive officer of PATH and PATH Ventures, and a board member of the San Diego Regional Task Force on the Homeless and 211 San Diego. He lives in Downtown San Diego. Although homelessness sometimes seems like an unsolvable problem, right now there is strong political alignment across the region to do everything we can to get people off the streets and into homes. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria recently announced new approaches to addressing encampments and the county of San Diego just created a new Department of Homeless Solutions and Equitable Communities. Housing First has long been the model that elected officials and service providers have embraced because it prioritizes placing someone into a permanent home and then focuses on stabilization by providing much needed services.

Opinion: Homeless individuals with a mental illness diagnosis fall into a vicious cycle that must be stopped

Solomon is a graduate student at the University of Southern California, and lives in Temecula. Did you wake up in a warm, safe environment this morning? Many Americans did not. The U.S. Department of Urban and Housing Development, in its 2020 Annual Assessment Report to Congress, said that 580,466 people experienced homelessness in the nation on a single night in 2020, an increase of 12,751 people from 2019. According to a study published in 2017 by the Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 25 percent of homeless individuals suffer from a serious mental illness, a stark contrast to the 4.2 percent with such issues in the general population.
