Jaku had met Kurt Hirschfeld, a fellow German Jew, when both were interned in Buchenwald shortly after Kristallnacht.  Their ways parted when the Nazis decided to take advantage of Jaku’s skills as a mechanical engineer.  Jaku was supposed to report to an aeronautical factory in Dessau, but instead he escaped to Belgium with other members of his family. Two Israeli bystanders leapt in to save a wounded man’s life following a mass shooting in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. Dvir Benesh and Shai Gino, both trained medics in the Israel Defense Forces, happened to be nearby when a gunman opened fire in the busy tourist district last Thursday evening. Gino, 28, is a former IDF captain in now married to an American and studying for U.S. citizenship. His friend Benesh, 26, served in a special unit of the IDF. Yom HaShoah Holocaust commemorations continue through to weekend -

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The San Diego Jewish community and members from the world over recognized Yom HaShoah from April 7 to 8, but community members are ensuring that the heroism of Holocaust survivors, and those who did not survive, continue to be remembered. A new program at the Jewish Federation of San Diego County teaches future generations the lessons learned by these survivors. Darren Schwartz, Chief Planning and Strategy Officer at the Jewish Federation of San Diego County, joined KUSI’s Good Morning San Diego for a detailed report of the commemoration and new program.
