San Diego La Mesa council member Dr. Akilah Weber will take the Assembly seat formerly held by her mother, according to results certified Thursday by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. Weber won a special election held April 6 with 33,197 votes, or 51.97 percent of the 64,189 ballots cast. With a majority of votes in the primary, she avoided a run-off election tentatively scheduled for June, which would have been held if no candidate earned more than 50 percent of the vote. The position became open in January, when former Assembly member Shirley Weber, who had held the office for a decade, was appointed to serve as California secretary of state.
