California officials say a bar owner who sold undercover agents fake COVID-19 vaccine cards is now facing charges for multiple crimes.
The state s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on Wednesday said agents purchased the fraudulent cards multiple times in April at the Old Corner Saloon in San Joaquin County, about 35 miles southeast of Sacramento.
Todd Anderson faces charges of felony identity theft and forging government documents, as well as a misdemeanor for falsifying medical records, San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Elisa Bubak said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY.
The cards sold for $20, Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control spokesman John Carr confirmed in an emailed statement to USA TODAY. It s the first time the department has investigated fraudulent COVID-19 vaccine cards and could mark the first such case in the nation.

The owner of Old Corner Saloon in Clements, California, was arrested and charged for allegedly selling fake COVID-19 vaccine cards, California state officials announced Wednesday.
California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) officials received a complaint that the saloon owner was selling fake vaccination cards and opened an investigation in April, according to the agency. Undercover ABC agents allegedly purchased fraudulent vaccination cards from the Old Corner Saloon on multiple occasions in April, the agency said.
“Agents arrested the owner of the business on allegations of selling the fraudulent cards,” a California ABC Spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “He was booked at the local county jail on charges of violating Penal Code Section 471.5 (altering a medical record), Penal Code Section 472 (forgery of a public seal), Penal Code Section 530.5 (identity theft), and Penal Code Section 182(a) (conspiracy).”

The accusation comes from Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), who said in a news release that their undercover agents were able to buy the fake vaccination cards multiple times in April at the bar.
The bar was identified as The Old Corner Saloon in Clements a. With help from the San Joaquin County Sheriff s Office and district attorney s office, the ABC said they were able to execute a search warrant at the site and recover materials related to the distribution of the fake cards.
