San Juan County • When Mark Chalmers began working in the uranium industry in the 1970s, robust regulations on radioactive material were just starting to emerge in the United States.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was established in 1975 after its predecessor, the Atomic Energy Commission, failed to protect workers and the environment from harmful radiation.

William and Kim DuTremaine are planning on opening a gym that will help with the physical rehabilitation of their clients at Cottonwood Clinical Services, Inc. As part of that proposal, the DuTremaines have proposed creating a food truck pavilion at 324 W. Main St. that would be known as Locke Street Eats.
The gym would be located in the former Bank of the Southwest building at the corner of Main and Locke streets. This building has been vacant for two years after the bank relocated to the adjacent building.
Public comment lasted over an hour at the San Juan County Commissionâs regular meeting on Jan. 5, as citizens from Grand and San Juan counties shared their arguments for and against allowing Rally on the Rocks, the popular UTV event, to take place on a piece of county property in Spanish Valley this year.
Event organizers had previously announced the eventâs headquarters and staging area would be moved from Grand County to the San Juan side of the county line in response to recent ordinances restricting UTV speeds and a perception that the Grand County Commission was unsupportive of the event. Indeed, the Grand County Commission voted on Dec. 5 to deny the event a 2021 permit, citing residentsâ complaints about noise pollution, event organizersâ refusal to comply with county criteria for the event, and other disturbances.
