Flooding leads to road closures near FM 1485 at San Jacinto River East Fork Tags:  Two roads along the East Fork of the San Jacinto River are impacted Monday morning. TxDOT closed FM 1485 at the San Jacinto Sunday night due to water over the bridge at the Montgomery County - Harris County line. The river has been steadily increasing due to heavy rain in Montgomery and Liberty counties. It was at 65.42 feet and the flood stage is 58 feet. Officials said FM 1485 at San Jacinto River East Fork is closed. It’s the main artery many workers traveling from the New Caney area to Huffman and Baytown. FM 2090 at East Fork remains open.

Lake Conroe closed due to high water levels, other potential safety risks Published:  Tags:  CONROE, Texas – The San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) and Montgomery County Constable Precinct 1 have announced that Lake Conroe will be closed Saturday as a result of the heavy rain that pushed through the area Friday and overnight into Saturday. According to the announcement, the lake closed at noon because the rain created issues like “high lake levels, the possibility of submerged objects, floating debris, and other hazards that could pose safety risks.” The SJRA is working to release water from the dam in order to get the water back to the normal level. SJRA and Montgomery County Constable Precinct 1 said they will monitor any additional rainfall events throughout the weekend.

Texans to observe San Jacinto Day Submitted by Judith D’Amico DRT Bosque River Chapter April 21 is San Jacinto Day in Texas, commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto. On this date in 1836, General Sam Houston and the Texas Army defeated Santa Anna’s Mexican troops, winning independence for Texas in a battle that lasted only 18 minutes. Though the battle was very short, the course was history was changed forever. San Jacinto Day was made a legal state holiday by the 14th Texas Legislature in 1874. San Jacinto Day is also a day to honor all who fought for the independence of Texas.   They were Texians    native citizens and immigrant citizens; speaking Spanish, English, German, and more   all with a common purpose of self-preservation and liberty.

In 2003, when Republicans had seized their first Texas House majority since Reconstruction and faced a $10 billion shortfall that had to be closed with spending cuts or higher taxes, debate on the budget lasted days. Democrats asked what Jesus might do if faced with cuts to programs for the neediest, while Republicans portrayed themselves as protecting hardworking Texans from higher taxes. Eventually, the GOP won out and House members killed most of the proposed 486 amendments to the budget before concluding their work just before midnight on the third day of debate.
