8 Backbone Trail routes from Malibu to Pacific Palisades

Print To take the truly scenic route from Malibu to Pacific Palisades, you won’t need a car. Pull on your hiking boots and head out on the Backbone Trail to experience the most spectacular and wildest parts of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The trail’s 67½ miles travel to woodsy canyons filled with native oaks and sycamores; high points for views of the Channel Islands in one direction and the San Gabriel Mountains in the other; and 16-million-year-old rock spires that look more like Arizona than L.A. 1/5 A hiker walks near Mesa Peak along the Backbone Trail in Corral Canyon.

P-22, the Famous Mountain Lion of Griffith Park, Checks Out Healthy At 11 Years Old

P-22 is probably the world s most famous mountain lion. He made the seemingly impossible 50-mile-trip from the Santa Monica Mountains to Griffith Park, crossing both the 101 and the 405 freeways to get there. It s a feat many fellow mountain lions just don t survive and he s still here, roaming the trails at the ripe old age of (we think) 11. Local wildlife specialists have been keeping tabs on the puma since his great migration in 2012, and last month they got another chance to check him out when replacing his GPS radio collar something that happens every two years. He looks good for an old cat, says Jeff Sikich, a biologist with the National Park Service s Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. For as much as we can tell from the work-up we give these animals for that hour we have them in our hands, he appeared healthy and fine.

Washington, D.C – The Grand Canyon and Santa Monica Mountains national park sites are among the many beneficiaries of the ambitious public lands package that passed the House of Representatives today that aims to protect public lands, combat climate change and advance environmental justice. The ‘Protecting America’s Wilderness and Public Lands Act’ passed the House in a 227-200 vote, and, if enacted, would designate almost 1.5 million acres of public land as wilderness and incorporate more than 1,000 river miles into the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The bill would also contribute towards the United States’ conservation target to conserve 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030, a target based on scientific recommendations in order to address the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Coyote Hunt contest draws attention to eco groups, calls contest cruel

A coyote hunting contest  hosted by a local gun and outdoor shop has sparked an outrage from environmental groups who expressed their hatred towards killing animals for sport. the contest was opened all through February and prizes would be given out to hunters who killed the 10 largest and smallest coyotes. The Ontario government and other governments in north America did endorsed bounties and paid hunters to kill coyotes in the past but this is no longer used. Eco-Groups like Earthroots and Coyote Watch Canada have vilified the contest, and they believe the contest is illegal according  to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation act.
