MILLBURY – Santa Claus made a special appearance in Millbury Saturday, Dec. 12, on board a big, red fire engine decked out for the holidays, riding through the streets of Millbury.
Following more than 40 years of tradition, the Millbury Fire Department is holding its annual Santa Run between Dec. 12-20. Firefighters from the four fire stations in town volunteer to be “Santa’s helpers’’ to ride with Santa through the roads in the districts. Our firefighters really love to bring Santa around to help with the holiday spirit, said Millbury Fire Chief Richard P. Hamilton Jr. This year that was multiplied because of the change in everyone’s world. There was certainly more of a need to bring cheer to raise spirits.
The mother approached the tables full of toys outside the entrance to the Land of Promise Church in Spotsylvania County, mask in place as she carefully studied offerings before selecting a race car set, a fire station puzzle, game balls and a few other gifts.
Walking back to her car, tears flowed as the Spotsylvania resident reflected on what a godsend the large Christmas community toy giveaway was for her children and other needy youngsters Saturday.
âIt just means so much, so much,â she said, pausing briefly as she was overwhelmed with emotion. âIâm picking up today for our four boys. My husbandâs hours have been cut way back this year because of COVID, to the point that weâre barely making our rent. Thatâs made it really hard to have any Christmas this year. Getting these things today makes such a difference for us.â
