It may come as a surprise to some, but southern Arizona is not only about saguaro cacti and desert sunsets. Somewhat unexpectedly, the arid region also features several pretty lakes and wetland areas teeming with migratory birds. Add in majestic mountain ranges and fascinating historic sites, and you have the makings of a wonderful southern Arizona state parks road trip.
In all, Arizona has 31 state park units. While much of the tourist attention goes to high-profile spots like Sedona’s Red Rock State Park and the Phoenix-area Lost Dutchman State Park, the parks near the southern Arizona community of Tucson, along with those in the southwestern corner of the state, shine brightly as well.
“It’s hard not to feel…well, it has felt like failure there,” says Allen, who recently retired from the U.S. Geological Survey, and has monitored landscape change in these mountains since he was a Ph.D. student in the late 1970s. “We saw the vulnerability. But we could not act substantively enough, quickly enough to deal with it.”
Across the Earth, people are watching the impacts of climate change play out across their homelands, the places they depend upon and love. From rising seas lapping at the shores and inundating coasts to the highest mountains, where snowpacks are dwindling and glaciers receding, we are reeling from how these changes affect every aspect of our lives. In all of this, there is room for grief. These changes are dangerous and disorienting. But building new relationships with the landscapes around us will allow us to survive and give the other species we still share this planet with the chance to thrive.

The city of Milton has exhausted its capability to add new sewer customers, a distinct quandary as economic development awaits the capability to double or triple capacity. Developments beckon at the door, while businesses coming into the industrial parks are dependent on the availability of sewer.
Milton needs a new wastewater treatment plant – yesterday. However, there are other factors bearing heavily on this urgent need to facilitate development hook ups. For example, the Blackwater River, considered a Florida Outstanding Water, is now an impaired water body from the effects of the wastewater effluent discharge. Also, the site selected for the new plant, near the Santa Rosa County Jail, suffers from steep grades, erosion and is uncomfortably close to the river.

Northern Mexican Garter Snake Gains 20,326 Acres of Protected Critical Habitat in Arizona, New Mexico
TUCSON,
Ariz. In response to nearly two decades of action by the Center for Biological Diversity, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today finalized critical habitat protection for the northern Mexican garter snake under the Endangered Species Act.
“Critical habitat protections will benefit not just this pretty garter snake, but people too by protecting some of the region’s rapidly dwindling cienega and streamside habitats,” said Brian Segee, a Center senior attorney. “The northern Mexican garter snake and most of the rest of the Southwest’s aquatic fauna is on a fast train to extinction. It’s a serious crisis that hardly anyone’s talking about.”
