(KION) The family of Tamario Smith has filed a lawsuit against the Santa Cruz County Jail and other agencies, alleging longstanding and systemic deficiencies that ultimately lead to the death of Tamario Smith.  Tamario Smith was only 20 years old when he was found facedown in his cell, surrounded by a mysterious liquid and his own body fluids. Smith was being held on a felony charge at the Santa Cruz County Jail. Dr. Katz, the psychologist who was assigned to examine Smith, was their establish whether Smith suffered from a psychiatric illness and recommend a course of treatment.

Jailed in February, several months after his 21st birthday, Tamario Smith died on Mother’s Day from what the Santa Cruz County Coroner’s Office classified as an accidental death caused by over-consumption of water in a short period of time. “The over-consumption of water was influenced by Mr. Smith’s underlying mental health issues,” according to a June 18Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office press release. “This water consumption led to an electrolyte imbalance, which caused Mr. Smith’s organs to fail, leading to Mr. Smith’s death.”

Ian Coetzee is charged with attempted murder following a shooting where a 19-year-old was critically hurt. 21-year-old Ian Coetzee is arrested for attempted murder related to a shooting that happened January 7 at Hangar Way in Watsonville. The victim was shot multiple times inside a warehouse where the suspect lived. The victim has since recovered, but Coetzee was able to escape the scene when the shooting initially happened. Detectives were able to locate Coetzee Tuesday night on Hangar Way, which is where the shooting took place.

(Renee Schiavone/Patch) SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA Two suspects were arrested this week after the Santa Cruz County Sheriff s Office found a highly flammable hash oil lab with cannabis concentrate estimated to be worth more than $2 million at a rural marijuana grow in Boulder Creek. Christopher Akers, 34, of Oregon, and Michael Akers, 43, of Washington, were booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail after the lab was discovered on Tuesday. The lab was found after the sheriff s office served a search warrant in the 600 block of Hartman Creek Road in Boulder Creek as part of an investigation into a possible unlicensed indoor cannabis cultivation operation.
