“This has been an unusual year for everybody,” Darnton said.
No school in the district lost more total students or at such a high percentage than El Dorado, according to district data.
While enrollment has been declining at SFPS and across New Mexico for years, the 2020-21 school year saw an even larger decrease. The district’s 120th day enrollment in 2021 totaled 11,586, down more than 650 students from the previous school year, a 5% drop.
Many schools – particularly those at the lower grade levels – saw large percentage decreases in enrollment, with eight seeing declines of more than 10% in one year. That includes Aspen and Amy Biehl community schools, and Chaparral, Nava, E.J. Martinez, Piñon and Kearny elementary schools.
Acting anything but, Gonzalez talked about how the sport has helped him.
“My coach, well I have two coaches, really helped me a lot to graduate, and to put me on the right path and keep me motivated educationally,” he said of coach Roger Ferguson, who started the program, and his assistant Daniel Bustos.
“I loved it,” Gonzalez said of the experience. “The people, the environment, the coaching, we have amazing coaches. The teammates, physically, you have your own little family. It’s an amazing environment for perfecting your craft.”
A Santa Fe High teacher, Ferguson said he’s tried creating school boxing teams in the past, but it wasn’t until returning to Santa Fe in 2017 that he finally got the go-ahead from principal Carl Murano. Ferguson said he believes the Demons are not only the sole public high school in the state with a boxing team, but also one of the very few in the country.
Hawthorne High was among the schools listed as ranking between Nos. 516 and 602.
U.S. News and World Report lists are, for many, a gold standard of rankings for colleges and universities. But the website has been extending its influence to high schools as well.
