Study touts revised antimicrobial prophylaxis protocol for ECMO patients
A revised antimicrobial prophylaxis protocol for patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was associated with reduced broad-spectrum antimicrobial use in those patients, without increased risk of infection or poor outcomes, researchers from the Mayo Clinic reported today in
Clinical Infectious Diseases.
In the quasi-experimental study, the researchers first compared prophylactic antimicrobial use and nosocomial infection rates in ECMO patients in the 3 years prior to the introduction of the protocol in July 2014 and the 3 years after. Under the protocol, antimicrobials with a broader spectrum of activity were selected for prophylaxis (prevention) in patients with prosthetic valves or cardiovascular devices. Antibiotic prophylaxis is common in ECMO patients because of their high risk of infection.

Griffiths held talks with Saudi Arabia’s deputy defense minister to discuss developments in Yemen
The UN envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, said Tuesday that the Saudi commitment to reaching a political settlement to the Yemeni conflict was crucial.
On Monday, Griffith held talks in Riyadh with Saudi Deputy Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman to discuss the situation in war-torn Yemen.
“We discussed ways to overcome obstacles facing prospects for peace in Yemen,” Griffiths said on Twitter. He stressed on the importance of the commitment of the kingdom and the region to reach “a negotiated, Yemeni-led, inclusive political settlement” towards ending the conflict “comprehensively and sustainably”.

The test is about my performance in given circumstances, not about how good or bad my circumstances are. Regardless of what circumstances I encounter, the test is about how well I exhaust all my efforts in achieving the objective of the Deen Allah has prescribed for me for His pleasure.
The Biden administration needs a Yemen policy
A Biden presidency is a great opportunity to revisit past U.S. interventions toward Yemen, which were shortsighted and counterproductive. The administration needs to adopt a new approach that can help end the conflict in the country and protects U.S. interests in the region long term. Despite its strategic importance, previous U.S. administrations viewed Yemen solely through a security lens, where assistance has been defined by counterterrorism objectives. For decades, the U.S. provided former President Ali Abdullah Saleh with training, arms, and funding that the dictator used to solidify his power and oppress his own people, leading to the 2011 youth uprising.
