Obituary: Reta M (Keefer) Hallgarth

1926-2021 • Elgin Reta May Hallgarth, 94, of Elgin, died May 1, 2021, at St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center. A graveside service will be held May 14 at 2 p.m. at the Elgin Cemetery. Casual dress is preferred by the family. Attendees must wear masks and practice social distancing to meet COVID-19 guidelines. Reta was born Aug. 11, 1926, in Imbler, to Rufus and Hazel Keefer. Her mother died when she was three weeks old. Her grandmother, Alice Reed, took Rita and her siblings, Clark and Arlis, to live with her. Sisters Irene and Hazel Jean went to live with other family members. They lived in La Grande for a short time but Reta grew up and attended school in Elgin.

The newsroom’s Delaware team Mark Eichmann, Zoë Read, and Cris Barrish had an impressive showing for coverage related to the coronavirus pandemic, racial injustice, and the 2020 presidential election. Read and Barrish swept first, second, and third place in the digital “social justice” category, and Read swept all three top spots for her coverage of people whose lives were cut short by COVID-19. The Delaware team also earned the top two spots for best radio reports, and first place for special TV programming.

This process tends to happen while in utero.   According to rarediseases.org, this disease is so rare, that an estimated one in every ten thousand people is documented in the United States to have this illness. The only reason I found out is because my great uncle had an aneurysm burst behind his eye and I was advised to get checked to make sure I didn t have any aneurysms.
