When Susan Gilgore, executive director at the Lockwood Mathews Mansion Museum in Norwalk, began thinking about a pandemic-related art exhibit, one of the first works that came to mind was a 1919 painting by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch.
This wasn’t Munch’s famous, frightening “Scream.” It was a self-portrait, showing the artist seated in an invalid’s robe and blanket, almost defeated by the Spanish flu. His pale face looks out from the canvas; only the circle of his open mouth reminiscent of the more lurid “Scream.”

The original picture of the veteran Vermont senator, who was seated with his arms and legs crossed while wearing a mask to help keep out COVID-19, was first taken during the inaugural speech of US President Joe Biden and VP Kamala Harris earlier this year.
Kroger closes more Los Angeles grocery stores in response to “Hero Pay”
The grocery store giant Kroger is planning to close three of its stores in Los Angeles, two Ralphs and one Food 4 Less, after the passing of a local “Hero Pay” ordinance that would grant grocery and pharmacy workers a $5 raise for the duration of the pandemic.
These “Hero Pay” laws, which have been adopted by a number of cities around the country now, have met with obstinate resistance from the employers. The California Grocers Association has initiated lawsuits against several cities in the state for passing these laws.
