A powerful cyclone destroyed tens of thousands of mud houses in eastern India on Wednesday, forcing the closure of the busiest regional airport in the city of Kolkata as it brought storm surges to coastal areas, the second such event within a week.
Cyclone Yaas was packing gusts of up to 140 kph (87 mph) as it hit land, authorities said, days after Tauktae tore up the western coast, triggering mass evacuations and piling pressure on authorities battling a deadly second wave of the coronavirus.
Authorities said more than a million people had been moved out of the storm’s path, while television broadcast images of rough seas, strong winds and rains lashing the state of Odisha, with shops and homes boarded up.

BHUBANESWAR: A powerful cyclone destroyed tens of thousands of mud houses in eastern India on Wednesday, forcing the closure of the busiest regional airport in the city of Kolkata as it brought storm surges to coastal areas, the second such event within a week.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rain lashed Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod on Tuesday under the influence of Cyclone Yaas. Low-lying areas in the capital were inundated following the rain. According to India Meteorological Department, Kasaragod received 9 cm rain during the 12 hours that ended on 8.30 pm on Tuesday followed by Thiruvananthapuram city with 7 cm. The Thampanoor KSRTC bus stand and railway station premises were flooded as heavy rain lashed the capital in the evening.
IMD has sounded yellow alert across the state except in Thrissur, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, warning of isolated heavy showers on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the southwest Monsoon has advanced into some parts of Maldives-Comorin area and more parts of Southwest and Southeast Bay of Bengal on Tuesday.

East Midnapore was the most affected district as it is closest to the point in Odisha where the cyclone made landfall.

KOLKATA: Cyclone Yaas battered the coastal areas in three districts, East Midnapore, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas, of West Bengal on Wednesday and the chief minister Mamata Banerjee said nearly 1 crore people of the state was affected because of the natural calamity. Report of one person’s death came from Ramnagar, East Midnapore.
