Traveling in the Sahel region, I have seen how conflict, poverty, natural disasters, and climate change are reversing the region s development path and magnifying people s mass displacement and food insecurity. I have also seen hope and resilience and an opportunity for us as an institution to make a difference.
One year ago – in February 2020 – I visited communities in the Sahel and heard about residents everyday struggles and their incredible stories of resilience in the face of adversity. I remember a woman in particular from a village near Niamey, Niger. Chad : N’Djamena Plays Hosts To G5 Sahel Summit
For two days, participants are expected to earmark concrete strategies aimed at combating jihadists in the region.
A G5 Sahel Summit is ongoing in the Chadian capital N’Djamena. The Summit began on Monday, February 15, 2021 with five Presidents from countries of the Sahel Region (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger), physically present. French President Emmanuel Macron who is the guest of honor is participating at the summit via videoconference. The French leader who was also expected to be physically present officially canceled his trip due to the prevailing sanitation situation.
