After first-time filmmaker Richard Kelly s brilliant-but-strange 2001 movie
Donnie Darko fizzled at the box office, another director might have followed it with something more obviously appetizing to Joe Public. Instead, Kelly doubled down on the weirdness and made
Southland Tales.
A sprawling sort-of post-apocalyptic science-fiction epic, the film starred Dwayne Johnson as a movie star named Boxer Santaros who writes a screenplay with Sarah Michelle Gellar s porn star Krista Now, which foretells the end of the world. Kelly s deep bench cast included Seann William Scott (portraying twins), Mandy Moore, Miranda Richardson, Wallace Shaun, Bai Ling, and
Saturday Night Live players Jon Lovitz, Amy Poehler, and Cheri Oteri. Justin Timberlake also appeared as a soldier who, high on some future-drug, participates in an elaborate, choreographed music video in which he lip syncs to the Killers All These Things That I ve Done.

Southland Tales Snyder Cut-Style Reinvention Plans Teased by Director Richard Kelly
Director Richard Kelly believes that, thanks to the popularity of streaming, now is the time for a six-hour version of his comedy thriller Southland Tales.
The unprecedented effort that has gone into making the soon-to-be-released

Donnie Darko s Richard Kelly, who is hopeful that the new investment in streaming platforms will allow him to realise the original vision that he had for his 2006 comedy thriller,
Southland Tales was one of The Rock’s first films, and the movie is set to get a special edition Blu-ray release from Arrow Video. Arrow has announced that the Richard Kelly film that stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Seann William Scott, and Justin Timberlake will receive a Blu-Ray release on January 26th that includes the extended cut that premiered at Cannes Film Festival in 2006. That cut runs 15 minutes longer than the 145 minute cut that released theatrically, which will also be on the release.
The film was Kelly’s directorical follow-up to his cult hit
Donnie Darko and was polarizing among critics, who praised its ambition but criticized it for being unfocused and incoherant. It did not receive a wide release in the US and ultimately grossed just $374,743 theatrically against a $17 million budget. In the years following, the movie has found ardent defenders and has developed a bit of a cult following.

On January 26, Arrow is proud to release Richard Kellyâs Southland Tales. This ambitious story about a conspiracy involving an action film star stricken with amnesia, a porn star with reality TV dreams, and a police officer was panned during its 2006 release. Critics, and some of those involved in the film, werenât entirely sure what to make of its long, sprawling nature. Yet, over the years, the film has maintained a strong, loyal fanbase that continues to grow, with many admiring the filmâs attempt at doing something grand. To this day, Kelly
