Senators Urge Biden to Pressure Saudis to Lift Blockade That Is Starving Yemen Conditions are so dire in Yemen that the UN warned 400,000 children will starve to death this year if nothing changes
A group of Democratic senators sent a letter to President Biden calling on him to pressure Saudi Arabia into lifting the blockade on Yemen, which is still being enforced despite UN warnings that 400,000 Yemeni children under five will starve to death this year if conditions do not change.
“Immediate and decisive action must be taken to end the ongoing blockade of fuel imports that is exacerbating the growing humanitarian crisis,” 16 senators wrote to Biden, an effort that was led by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). “The United States has diplomatic and economic leverage to compel Saudi Arabia to end its callous blockade of Yemen and we must use it before more lives are needlessly lost.”

The U.S. Navy last week seized thousands of weapons aboard an Iranian ship likely bound for Yemen to arm Houthi militants.
A Coast Guard team launched from the USS
Monterey flagged down and boarded the ship in the Arabian Sea for a routine flag verification and discovered thousands of Chinese rifles and dozens of Russian missiles, the Navy announced Saturday. An American defense official told the Associated Press the ship is of Iranian origin. Lt. Cmdr. Pete Pagano, a spokesman for the Navy s Fifth Fleet, told CNN Monday that the Navy has interdicted similar arms shipments in the area that were headed to Houthi militants. Navy officials are investigating the origin and intent of the confiscated weapons.

US Blames Houthis for Lack of Progress Towards Ceasefire in Yemen The Houthis are calling for the blockade to be lifted, which is still being enforced despite UN warnings that 400,000 will starve to death
The State Department released a statement on Friday slamming the Houthis for their refusal to meet with the UN’s special envoy to Yemen and blaming the group for the failure to reach a ceasefire agreement.
“The Houthis passed up a major opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to peace and to make progress on this proposal by refusing to meet with UN Special Envoy Griffiths in Muscat,” the statement said that was released upon the return of the President Biden’s envoy to Yemen, Timothy Lenderking.
