A father-and-sons partnership has purchased the Ames Tribune building and has plans to honor the historic structure while adding to the synergy of downtown Ames.
Jerry Nelson, president of Nelson Electric Company, and his sons, Chris Nelson, vice president, and Matt Nelson, manager, have purchased the building located at 317 Fifth St. in downtown Ames.
“We want to add our energy to the other neat things that are going on downtown the work at the Sheldon Munn that Dan Oh is doing, Noir bar opening up, the sidewalk repairs,” Chris Nelson said. “There are a lot of things happening downtown. The opportunity presented itself to play a bigger role in that, and we jumped on it.”
Since Tuesday, April 6, more than 1,000 people have signed the petition against the amendments. 2:00 pm, Apr. 9, 2021 ×

GRAND FORKS A petition asking North Dakota legislators to remove amendments related to Planned Parenthood and other organizations that perform abortions has collected more than 1,000 signatures as of Thursday, April 8.
The petition comes the same week the North Dakota House approved legislative amendments that would levy potential arrest for faculty or staff who sign contracts with organizations that perform abortions. This comes after lawmakers say North Dakota State University failed to heed the Legislature’s warning last session about its continued partnership with Planned Parenthood.

KINGSFORD The city of Kingsford plans to apply for an AARP Community Challenge Grant of $20,000 to construct pickleball courts in Lodal Park.
The idea came from city resident Andy Wiltzius, who approached the citizen’s advisory committee. The city will provide up to $5,000 in matching funds. The grant application is due April 12.
In the past, the city has tried to get money for pickleball courts through a Michigan Recreation Passport grant. Last year the city applied for a project in the amount of $180,000, which included a $135,000 grant and a $45,000 local match, for the pickleball courts and to replace aging playground equipment at Lodal, but they were not approved.
