Details Georgia Tech is part of a team that has been selected to manage the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL).Download Image Posted December 28, 2020 • Atlanta, GA The Battelle Savannah River Alliance (BRSA) – which includes Georgia Tech – has been selected by the Department of Energy to manage one of the country’s premier environmental, energy, and national security research facilities the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL).  Employing approximately 1,000 staff, SRNL conducts research and development for diverse federal agencies, providing practical, cost-effective solutions for the nation’s environmental, nuclear security, energy, and manufacturing challenges. As the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Environmental Management Laboratory, SRNL provides strategic scientific and technological support for the nation’s $6 billion per year waste clean-up program.

Three South Carolina universities are part of a team selected by the US Department of Energy to manage and operate the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), one of the country s premier environmental, energy and national security research facilities. The University of South Carolina, Clemson University and South Carolina State University, along with the University of Georgia and Georgia Institute of Technology, are part of the BSRA Team the Battelle Savannah River Alliance that secured the contract to manage and operate (M&O) SRNL. Employing approximately 1,000 staff, SRNL conducts research and development for diverse federal agencies, providing practical, cost-effective solutions for the nation’s environmental, nuclear security, energy and manufacturing challenges.  

SC colleges see chance for more research dollars in Savannah River nuclear lab partnership

State University, as well as Georgia Institute of Technology and University of Georgia, for partners. Battelle is a seasoned contractor, overseeing eight other national laboratories across the country. The group commonly recruits academic institutions to help fulfill its contracts. Battelle values university partnerships in all of its DOE national lab management contracts, spokeswoman Katy Delaney said. Nuclear and particle physicists from State University of New York conduct research in climate change and renewable energy at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. Texas A&M University and the University of California do nuclear energy production and environmental cleanup work at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. University of Tennessee scientists do work at DOE s largest science and energy laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
