International Mountain Day 2020: Be it the snow-capped peaks of the majestic Himalayas or the volcanic beauty of Mount Fuji, mountains are some of the most fascinating landscapes in the world. They are home to 15per cent of the world´s population and host about half of the world s biodiversity hotspots. The United Nations marks December 11 as International Mountain day to encourage sustainable development in mountains.

History of International Mountain Day The increasing attention to the importance of mountains led the UN to declare 2002 the UN International Year of Mountains. The first international day was celebrated for the first time the following year, 2003.

SRINAGAR, Dec 11: The International Mountain Day- 2020 was celebrated with great fervor by the Adventure lovers in Kashmir valley with the main function organized by the Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir at TRC, here today.
Hundreds of Adventure lovers, boys and girls participated in the seminar organized by the Directorate of Tourism Kashmir at TRC Hall. During the seminar, various short films were screened to showcase the potential of adventure tourism in the Valley.
Aparna Kumar (IPS) was the chief guest on the occasion. Born in 1974, Aparna Kumar is an IPS Officer of 2002 batch of Uttar Pradesh Cadre. She is a proud recipient of the prestigious Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2018 for her outstanding mountaineering achievements, presented to her by the President of India.

Remo D Souza suffered a heart attack
Filmmaker-choreographer Remo D souza suffered a heart attack on December 11 and is currently in the ICU at Mumbai s Kokilaben Hospital. He had a heart attack. There was a blockage. For now, doctors have done angiography and he is currently in the Intensive Care Unit, sources told PTI. He s stable now and under observation, PTI sources added.
Srinagar: Webinar on International Mountain day was organised by Institution of Engineers (India) J&K State Centre, Srinagar, in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department, J&K Mountaineering & Hiking Club and J&K State Emergency Operation Centre, Srinagar on Friday.
The webinar was inaugurated by Chief Conservator of Forests Kashmir, Syed Farooq A Gillani, who appreciated the participants for showing keen interest towards conservation of biodiversity of forests and mountains and its resources. He said that mountains are the repositories of resources. He called the mountains “Jewels of Nature” and “Water Towers” but said that these resources are under constant threat by indiscriminate activities of humans.
