“I discovered I had fibroids before getting pregnant with my first child. I had visited a number of clinics with stomachache complaints, vomiting and a few other symptoms, but a diagnosis was never reached. I spent a lot of money (about Shs2m) but all the time, I was just moving around in circles,” Gertrude Nekesa shares.

Celebrated under the theme: ‘Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 world,’ the day came one year after coronavirus was declared a global pandemic.
Important to note is that when the world was beaten into lockdown as a means to check the fast spreading virus, women suffered more. Students were sent back home, businesses were closed, health facilities were hard to access, and the world literally shut down.
The effects were heavier on the informal sector, which employs many urban poor, majority of them being women and youth, according to the Uganda National Bureau of Statistics (Unbs).

Aware of the increasing health and social burden of fibroids, this Women’s month, Nation Media Group (NMG)-Uganda and partner hospitals are running a fibroids awareness campaign to provide information and support with regard to the health condition. In a new series starting today, this newspaper features real life stories and expert advice on the risks, remedies and treatment available as well as facilitating a conversation on a subject that is often covered up in silence and stigma.

However, the global burden of diseases has changed significantly over the past decades.
Currently, the greatest burden of death and disability among women is attributable to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) most notably cardiovascular diseases, cancers, respiratory diseases, diabetes, dementia, depression, and musculoskeletal disorders.
