(Smart) commended the Philippine government, and all partners in the anti-trafficking sector for retaining the country’s Tier 1 status in the 2021 Trafficking in Persons Report by the U.S. Department of State. For six years in a row, the Philippines has remained on Tier 1, the report’s highest classification, for “fully [meeting] the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking.” The report, released annually, noted the government’s “serious and sustained efforts” against the crime. IJM Philippines, PLDT and Smart have been staunch allies of the Philippine government in the fight against human trafficking, especially the trafficking of children to create child sexual exploitation material (CSEM).
