After years of steep declines in the number of refugees coming to the region, organizations dedicated to helping people resettle in Massachusetts after fleeing war and persecution are racing to ramp up for an expected surge of these newcomers this year.
Less than a week after President Joe Biden raised the cap on the number of refugees the U.S. will take in, local nonprofits and church organizations say they need to expand their operations to meet an increase of refugees expected here by this summer and fall.

The mission of the Commonwealth Corps service internship program is to engage Massachusetts residents of all ages and backgrounds in service to strengthen communities, address critical community needs, and increase volunteerism. By taking on a year of service, you can positively impact your community while gaining skills and experience.
The Massachusetts Service Alliance (MSA) is a private, nonprofit agency that oversees the program and supports host site partners and members to find success throughout the program year. The four Commonwealth Corps members with the International Institute of New England (IINE) will serve 10.5 months in a full-time capacity. They will join a corps of members across Massachusetts who share a common desire to put their talents and ideas to use in the service of their communities and the Commonwealth.

BOSTON–The International Institute of New England (IINE) is presenting the prestigious Golden Door Award to Dr. Reshma Kewalramani, the President and CEO of Vertex Pharmaceuticals on Tuesday, April 27 in a virtual ceremony. The event will be broadcast from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. that evening.
A native of Mumbai, Dr. Kewalramani is the first woman to lead a top-five biotech company and is one of a handful of women who have received this prestigious award. She came to the U.S. with her family as a child, studied medicine at Boston University, practiced at MGH and Brigham and Women’s Hospitals, and eventually made her way to a career in biotechnology.
