Celebrated under the theme: ‘Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 world,’ the day came one year after coronavirus was declared a global pandemic.
Important to note is that when the world was beaten into lockdown as a means to check the fast spreading virus, women suffered more. Students were sent back home, businesses were closed, health facilities were hard to access, and the world literally shut down.
The effects were heavier on the informal sector, which employs many urban poor, majority of them being women and youth, according to the Uganda National Bureau of Statistics (Unbs).

INTERNATIONAL Women s Day falls every year on March 8 and celebrates the achievements of women throughout history.
Today, Google has taken the opportunity to mark the date with an animated Doodle.

What is International Women s Day?
The day is not country, group or organisation specific - and belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.
The day has taken place for over 100 years, with the first IWD gathering taking place in 1911 but under the name National Women s Day.
IWD s seeds were sown in August 1910, when an International Socialist Women s Conference was organised to precede the general meeting of the Socialist Second International in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The significance of the Second International Conference of Women Socialists should not be judged by its depiction in the press. There it was overshadowed by the larger, more significant event that it preceded - the International Socialist Congress - to such an extent that the essential features and significance of the women’s conference could not be clearly outlined.
Its importance and its achievements, however, will undoubtedly find expression in the activity of the women comrades of all countries who sent their representatives to the meeting. And this is what matters. If we examine the outcome of the proceedings in Copenhagen from this perspective, then the female comrades ought to be satisfied with it.
