International Underwriting Association Elects Zurich’s Kuchinski as Chairman February 1, 2021
Robert Kuchinski, head of Commercial Insurance at Zurich UK, has been elected as the new chairman of the International Underwriting Association (IUA). He replaces Patrick Tiernan who recently announced he would be leaving his role as managing director UK Commercial Lines & Global Corporate & Specialty at Aviva to become chief of markets at Lloyd’s of London.
Kuchinski has been a member of the IUA Board since June 2019 and was previously one of two IUA deputy chairmen with Phil Hobbs, managing director at Liberty Specialty Markets. Hobbs will continue in that role as the single IUA deputy chairman.

Tiernan, who had been IUA chair since September, was obliged to step down as his upcoming move to Lloyd’s will mean he is no longer working for an IUA member company.

Underwriters Group To Prioritize Climate Change In 2021
Law360, London (January 26, 2021, 12:16 PM GMT) A group of insurance underwriters said on Tuesday that they are putting the fight against climate change at the top of their business agenda in 2021, adding that insurers have a vital role to play in protecting the environment.
The International Underwriting Association said that its plan for 2021 will reflect the fact that climate change is a major concern for the London market. The association will set up a climate risk committee, made up of insurance experts, which will work with regulators to identify how the industry can help to fend off global warming.
Lloyd’s Appoints Aviva’s Tiernan to New Chief of Markets Position January 22, 2021
Patrick Tiernan will be joining Lloyd’s of London in the newly-created role of chief of Markets, where he will will oversee market performance and distribution.
Tiernan will join Lloyd’s from Aviva where he is currently the managing director, UK Commercial Lines and Global Corporate and Speciality. He was also previously the chief financial officer of Aviva Insurance Ltd.
Tiernan has 24 years of experience in the insurance industry, including serving as Group chief operating officer at Starstone Insurance and chief executive officer of Zurich’s centrally managed businesses. He is chairman of the International Underwriting Association and sits on the London Market Group’s board of directors. He is also on the board of ClimateWise and the Innovation Working Group of the Bank of England’s Climate Financial Risk Forum.
