The International Indigenous Music Summit is getting ready to kick off, but this time with a virtual twist.
The summit is an event to create awareness about Indigenous artists, as well as opportunities and sharing resources.
Due to the pandemic, the usual in-person gathering has shifted to an online platform with a new element being added to the five-day festival called Giiwewizh, which means to carry home in Anishinaabemowin.
With this new element, Indigenous artists who were isolating at their homes created short docs to bring storytelling and music performances.
International Indigenous Music Summit Announces GIIWEWIZH, featuring Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Beatrice Deer, Logan Staats and more.
Giiwewizh series, 16 original short docs directed by Canadian Screen Award nominated Sarain Fox, premieres June 8-12.
Ottawa, ON, May 6, 2021– The International Indigenous Music Summit unveils a major feature for 2021 with Giiwewizh, an artful and compelling twist on the ‘virtual festival.’ Giiwewizh (pronounced Gi-weh-wish) original short docs, directed by accomplished storyteller/disrupter Sarain Fox, bring personal storytelling together with musical performances made in isolation to highlight the special connection between Indigenous artists and their home territories. Artists include Aysanabee, Beatrice Deer, Blue Moon Marquee, Classic Roots, G.R. Gritt, Hasaatuk, Jay Gilday, Julian Taylor, Kanen, Logan Staats, Mamarudegyal MHTC, Morgan Toney, Nimkii, Shawnee, Snotty Nose Rez Kids and The North Sound. Full details here.
