According to reports by aid agencies and local media, more than 8,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged in Sofala province, with many thousands housed in emergency accommodation centres. Immediate concerns are for the provision of basic supplies such as food, water and hygiene facilities, as well as the associated risks of the spread of disease. In addition to water-borne diseases such as cholera, authorities are worried about the spread of COVID-19 in the cramped conditions of the emergency facilities.

More than two centuries after slavery was outlawed, 29.8 million people globally continue to be subjected to new and diverse forms of servitude, a new index ranking 162 countries shows. Haiti, India, Nepal, Mauritania and Pakistan have the highest prevalence of modern-day slavery, according to the first edition of the Global Slavery Index (compiled by Australian-based rights organization Walk Free Foundation), while in absolute numbers, China, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria and Pakistan have the most people enslaved. In India, almost 14 million people are believed to be victims of modern slavery. Contemporary servitude, however, is “poorly understood, so it remains hidden within houses, communities and worksites”, it stated.
