Surf Expo, the major trade show for the water-sports and beach-lifestyle categories, was held Jan. 6–8. While the
Emerald Expositions–owned Surf Expo relied on its digital edition Sept. 16–18,
Surf Expo Connect, many in the industry felt it was time to return to the trade-show floor.

Twice a year, the outdoor industry gathers in Denver for its Outdoor Retailer (OR) trade shows. You’ve probably seen the 12-foot-tall “OR” block letters orange for June’s Summer Market Show and blue for January’s Winter Market Show standing next to the Colorado Convention Center’s iconic big, blue bear. Perhaps you’ve even attended the event as a representative from a local brand, retailer, or nonprofit partner. Or maybe you’ve just had the misfortune of trying to get a dinner reservation downtown while the show is going on.
Joe Biden becomes the country’s 46th president at a time when the United States is mired in a pandemic and its related economic challenges. His proposed solutions, and their effectiveness, is surely how the first part of his presidency will be measured.

Emerald, the parent company of Surf Expo and Outdoor Retailer announced Wednesday morning that it has acquired PlumRiver, the company behind Elastic Suite, a digital B2B platform used by some of the biggest names in the action sports and outdoor industries, including Patagonia, Vans, The North Face, Burton, Rip Curl, Boardriders, Volcom, Puma, New Balance and many others.
The total purchase price at closing was $34 million, including $30 million in cash and the rest in stock, according to an SEC filing.
Emerald operates live events across a wide array of industries and sees an opportunity to introduce Elastic to its brand customers while increasing Emerald’s digital capabilities.
