CUPE, the union representing 4,600 municipal workers in Winnipeg, is cautioning the City against privatizing its wastewater system after revelations the province wants the City to explore sewage treatment privatization.
“Winnipeg families will pay the price” if EPC votes to privatize the city’s wastewater system, the union said in a statement on Friday.

“This is a critical public service that allows us to ensure the safe management of Manitoba’s lakes and rivers,” Gord Delbridge, president of CUPE Local 500 said in the statement. “This effort will put our lakes and rivers at risk of increased pollution, including allowing for the presence of harmful chemicals and urine at our public beaches along Lake Winnipeg.”
