As a group of Avera Health officials dug their shovels into the dirt on Tuesday at one of Mitchell’s longest-running assisted living facilities, they ushered in a $3.6 million expansion.

The Mitchell Area Development Corporation and Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce has found its new leader in Geri Beck.
After going nine months without a director, the MADC and Chamber of Commerce Board tabbed Beck, a longtime Mitchell resident, to serve as the nonprofit organization’s CEO. The decision was announced Thursday morning.

The state of South Dakota has opted against seeking the death penalty for a Mitchell man who was charged with first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing and killing a 56-year-old man.
Robert Ladenburger, 60, of Mitchell, was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter and aggravated assault with intent to cause bodily harm through the use of a dangerous weapon. While he pleaded not guilty to the charges in September, Ladenburger faced the death penalty as the maximum sentence, if found guilty of the charges. Avera Queen of Peace Hospital will host a walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinic from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 23, in the Avera Patient Financial Services building located at 1308 West 15th Avenue (on the Highway 37 bypass next to Floor to Ceiling).
Scheduled appointments are preferred for planning purposes, but will not be necessary for this clinic.
“We’re doing all we can to offer easy-to-access vaccinations to people in our community,” said Eric Larson, vaccine coordinator for Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. “If you were waiting for your turn to be vaccinated, now’s the time. Please join us.”
