Guns at church bill clears Fla. Senate panel

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - A proposal that would expand the authority of people to carry concealed firearms at religious institutions began moving forward Monday in the Florida Senate.
In a party-line vote, the Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee backed the measure (SB 498), which would allow people with concealed-weapons licenses to bring guns on properties that churches, synagogues or other religious institutions share with schools.
Florida law generally allows people to carry concealed weapons at religious institutions, but it bars being armed on school properties. That leads to people being prevented from carrying guns on properties shared by religious institutions and schools.
Sen. Joe Gruters bac proposal requires online businesses with no physical presence in Florida to collect sales taxes when customers in Florida make purchases.
A proposal that could pump more than $600 million a year in tax dollars into coronavirus-damaged state and local coffers got off to a quick start Monday in the Florida Senate.
But backers of the proposal (SB 50), which drew unanimous support from the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee, just don’t want anyone calling tax collections required in the bill a “new” tax.
Sen. Joe Gruters, who doubles as chairman of the state Republican Party, said his proposal simply requires online businesses with no physical presence in Florida to collect sales taxes when customers in Florida make purchases.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach President Trump by a vote of 232 to 197. Ten Republicans joined the Democratic majority.

Ted Deutch: Impeachment must be followed by removal
U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Boca Raton, said Wednesday that President Trump must be removed from office. In a statement issued after the U.S. House bipartisan vote, Deutch said: For inciting a violent and deadly insurrection, for instigating domestic terrorists even as they smashed their way into the Capitol building and called for the hanging of Vice President Pence and the death of Members of Congress, and for refusing to call off his mob as they occupied the most prominent symbol of American democracy in an attempt to overturn the results of the election, he must be impeached and removed from office.
