Sumner High School among St Louis schools considered for closing

Northwest Academy of Law High School Carnahan will go back to being a middle school. Historic Sumner High School had also been recommended for closure, but the board has postponed that decision until March. Sumner alum and former schools superintendent Dr. John Wright was asked how one school could produce so much talent, including Tina Turner, Chuck Berry, Arthur Ashe, comedian Dick Gregory, Billy Davis, Jr. and Grace Bumbry. “Because of segregation,” said Wright. “Everyone who lived west of Grand Avenue after they got Vashon attended Sumner.” Wright put on his school colors and dusted off his 1957 yearbook. He said during segregation, African-American youngsters who lived in St. Louis County could apply to come to high school in St. Louis or go to Douglas in Webster Groves.

Sumner was beaten in the capitol after his “Crime Against Kansas” speech which argued for the admission of Kansas to the union as a free state. At Sumner Academy of Arts and Sciences in Kansas City, Kansas, teachers are talking with students about the riot while drawing lessons from the school’s namesake.“It s really unfortunate, but it s also very ironic. And it also gives us an opportunity to have a discussion on the polar opposites that we see in that picture,” said Jamelle Brown, Debate and Forensics teacher at Sumner Academy. “Charles Sumner was all about bringing people together. He was one who was not looked upon very wisely from some of the people in his party, because he was so radical in the whole idea that we do not need slavery. And so we need to make
