She had been sent to get an interview and she would get it, but not without some help. Her assignment: talk to the Black minister, civil rights leader and 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner – Martin Luther King, Jr. – who had just flown into Kansas City.
“I saw him in the airport corridor,” said Helen Gray, the first Black woman hired as a reporter by the Kansas City Star-Times.

Carnahan will go back to being a middle school. Historic Sumner High School had also been recommended for closure, but the board has postponed that decision until March.
Sumner alum and former schools superintendent Dr. John Wright was asked how one school could produce so much talent, including Tina Turner, Chuck Berry, Arthur Ashe, comedian Dick Gregory, Billy Davis, Jr. and Grace Bumbry.
“Because of segregation,” said Wright. “Everyone who lived west of Grand Avenue after they got Vashon attended Sumner.”
Wright put on his school colors and dusted off his 1957 yearbook. He said during segregation, African-American youngsters who lived in St. Louis County could apply to come to high school in St. Louis or go to Douglas in Webster Groves.
