Governors School Supply Drive Extended Through

The 4th Annual Governor’s School Supply Drive is being extended to encourage more donations for supplies to support North Carolina students and teachers.  Public health precautions have required the drive to go fully  online  with donations collected through the North Carolina Parent Teacher Association, a new partner for this year’s drive. Growing national movements to rectify the twin evils of mass incarceration and discriminatory barriers to employment and housing when people return home from prison have passed model public policies such as Ban the Box in employment and Fair Chance Housing. As our cities grow more and more expensive to live in and homelessness explodes, what are model public policy solutions that enable people with criminal records to access stable and affordable housing? As we work to create a more perfect union, how do we not replicate racial oppression in our public policymaking processes by honoring the voices and leadership of formerly incarcerated residents? What are the myths and stories that society tells us about people with criminal records and how has that prevented us from providing a basic human need and right to housing?

Communities In Schools of Kalamazoo hosts a reimagined Ugly Sweater Competition and last updated 2020-12-13 09:09:10-05 Given the current conditions with Covid-19, an annual Ugly Sweater Competition has been reimagined. The creativity goes to support the success of students of greater Kalamazoo. This year s festivities features an exhibit of the sweaters in a window display at the Exchange Building on South Rose Street. The exhibit will be available to viewers until December 18. Meanwhile, the virtual competition will continue through December 31. Members of the general public can vote for their favorite ugly sweater, where each vote translates into dollars spent by sponsors in support of students.
