Health Net Study Looks at COVID in Communities of Color | San Fernando Valley Business Journal

Health Net, the medical insurer in Woodland Hills, has partnered with L.A.-based nonprofit Wesley Health Centers to conduct a study assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on racial minorities and underserved communities, the company said Monday. The partnership is part of a broader, national study by Health Net parent company Centene, and the National Minority Quality Forum, a Washington, D.C.-based research and educational nonprofit. Wesley will offer free COVID-19 screenings at no cost to patients as part of the partnership at sites in Lancaster, Lynwood and Bell. Quest Diagnostics will provide molecular diagnostic testing. Those who test positive will receive monitoring kits to track symptom progression and daily calls from a study nurse during the first 14 days in quarantine.

Research shows only 1 in 3 Black adults with mental health issues receive care

Research shows only 1 in 3 Black adults with mental health issues receive care and last updated 2021-02-17 13:55:45-05 According to research from Columbia University, Black adults are 20% more likely to experiences serious mental health problems, such as major depressive orders and generalized anxiety disorders. And, researchers say young Black adults experience higher rates of mental health problems while using mental health services than their white counterparts. The disparity highlights the stigmatization of mental health issues in communities of color that has deterred Black men and women from seeking treatment, according to experts. “Being a person of color and admitting that you need something is very difficult,” said Lesha Groves, a licensed therapist and the associate director of operations at the Mental Health Center of Denver.
