Biodiversity management committees (BMCs) and tree committees in most civic bodies across the State are currently inactive and impotent. Although they do not have direct powers to take action against anyone for harming the environment, they can do a lot to help conserve the environment by bringing the culprits to book. “I am sad to say that BMCs in all panchayats and municipalities in Palakkad district are thoroughly inactive,” said Babu Bonaventure, district coordinator of the Biodiversity Board.

May 22, 2021 The meeting was informed that the Forest Department has prepared a detailed plan under Green J&K drive wherein 5 lakh plants each have been kept for plantation in smart cities of Jammu and Srinagar. The department will plant these saplings in the identified areas and will also provide saplings to various other agencies for plantation in the earmarked areas under the Mission. Besides, the Social Forestry Department will also be contributing in this plantation drive especially in institutions. Regarding progress achieved in the month of April under CAPEX, CAMPA and other CSS schemes, It was informed that the actual planting season starts in the month of July in Jammu region and November in Kashmir region. Besides, at present all the forest divisions are all set for the plantation drive and sufficient plants have already been raised and being maintained in the government nurseries besides e-tendering for works, procurement of materials is also going on in full swing. Updated: Share Article AAA The Haritha Keralam Mission in the district recently honoured the authorities of St. Mary’s Jnanodayam School at Maikkavu for maintaining a green grove on the campus. Even with COVID-19 restrictions in force, the students have shown the way by setting up vegetable gardens and groves in their homes, besides maintaining the green grove set up at the school much before the lockdown. “Several schools in the district have taken an extra effort to maintain their groves even in these difficult times. Students and teachers share the responsibilities,” said P. Prakashan, district coordinator of the Mission.
