EXETER – Two honours are recognizing a Bar River native’s efforts to help others in a southwestern Ontario community.
Andrea Loohuizen, who now lives in Exeter, north of London, was named a Remarkable Citizen of the Year by Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson.

Exeter Lakeshore Times Advance, a sister paper of The Sault Star, and Municipality of Huron Shore, selected Loohuizen as a Hometown Hero for her work in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Times Advance readers are invited to nominate residents who are helping others. Paramedics and Exeter residents who’ve helped others get to medical appointments have been recognized.

As homelessness issues continue to gain attention in Huron County, Hometown Heroes like Andrea Loohuizen are doing everything they can to ensure that those in need are not left without help.
“There’s so many people in Exeter that would be so deserving of this nomination,” said Loohuizen. “As a town, we are so blessed to be able to say that.”

Loohuizen is the volunteer co-ordinator at Exeter Pentecostal Tabernacle where she organizes Noah’s Ark and The Community Table. She grew up in Sault Ste. Marie and went to university at Nipissing in North Bay, eventually moving to Peterborough after finishing school. Though she moved to Exeter only five years ago, her work in the not-for-profit sector has shown her how welcoming the community can be, and how willing the people are to help.

Shoreditch Trust has delivered thousands of meals to people in need during the pandemic. Picture taken pre-Covid.

A charity in Hackney has received a £3,700 donation from technology giant Amazon, after providing 17,500 meals to people in need over the last 10 months.
Shoreditch Trust, in Orsman Road, supports people facing challenging situations and health, economic and social inequality.
It has since delivered thousands of freshly cooked meals to people too poorly to cook or shop for food through its Community Table programme.
Jaimie Tapper, deputy chief of the Shoreditch Trust said: “ The funding allows us to continue to deliver cooked food, to those who are seriously unwell, living with underlying health conditions, limited mobility, don t have support networks, with babies and young children or lack access to safe cooking facilities.
