Before the interview took place, Selectman Keith Silvia announced that he had to recuse himself from the selection process due to a conflict of interest. Silvia’s wife, Anne, is an employee of the town and, if Graves was selected, she would work directly beneath her.  Selectman Daniel Freitas later said he found it peculiar that Silvia’s conflict of interest wasn’t brought up by counsel or the screening committee until now, several months and in the final stages of the TA appointment process.  That left only two of the three selectmen to continue the process, which did constitute a quorum.

He said after an initial pool of candidates was whittled from 33 to 17, seven applicants underwent a more intensive interview. From that process, the finalists were selected.

Oak Bluffs enlisted Umass Collins in its search for a new town administrator at a meeting Tuesday night. Rich Saltzberg With longtime town administrator Robert Whritenour heading to a new post in Yarmouth, Oak Bluffs is enlisting the help of the Edward J. Collins, Jr. Center for Public Management at the University of Massachusetts Boston. At a meeting Tuesday evening, selectmen charted their course by voting to conduct a local search for a new town administrator with the assistance of UMass Collins. The town will spend the first month advertising the position locally to seek local candidates. If the local search isn’t fruitful, selectmen will expand their search off-Island. The UMass Collins services will cost the town $9,000.
