SPRINGFIELD The Gunn Block on State Street was added as the 18th local historic district in Springfield on Monday night, and for community preservation activists such as Robert McCarroll, it never gets old.
The City Council voted unanimously Monday to create the Gunn Block as a single-building historic district, hoping it will enhance preservation and reuse efforts.
McCarroll, chairman of the Community Preservation Committee, praised the vote Tuesday and said there are numerous single-building historic districts across Massachusetts among the larger districts, as permitted by state law.

There s a saying that central New York has two seasons: snow and construction.
With snow most likely gone until the end of the year, construction has indeed become more visible around the area. In downtown Auburn, though, some of that construction is announced by a sign: Downtown Revitalization Initiative.

Their progress has been slowed by the economic ripple effects of the pandemic, though some have been slowed more than others. COVID-19 also delayed the finalization of the city s grant agreement with the state, said Tracy Verrier, executive director of Cayuga Strategic Solutions and co-chair of the commi

SPRINGFIELD The City Council is considering designating the Gunn Block at 473-477 State St. a local historic district, aimed at enhancing its preservation and future use.
Believed to be the oldest still-standing commercial building in Springfield, the Gunn Block is across from the Springfield Armory National Historic Site and is already listed as a historic property by the city and state. The three-story block, built circa 1830, was stabilized last year by its owner, DevelopSpringfield, aided by a $250,000 grant from the Community Preservation Committee and $168,000 from the MassDevelopment brownfields program.
