Water ministry tender allotment case referred to Public Prosecution

AMMAN The Jordan Integrity and Anti-Corruption Commission (JIACC) on Monday referred a case to the Public Prosecution, in which the Water Ministry awarded a JD14-million tender to a company to drill seven wells despite expert opinion that treating the water will be a difficult task.
An official source at the JIACC said that JD14,864,582, was awarded despite studies and recommendations against implementing the tender because the water in these wells is very hot and very salty , the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
RIYADH: Jordanian public debt surged by 10.6 percent in 2020 to 26.50 billion dinars ($37.4 billion) as the government spent heavily to support its economy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jordan’s public debt ended 2020 at 85.4 percent of GDP, up from 75.8% a year earlier, according to Ministry of Finance data. The ministry recently changed its methodology for calculating public debt, excluding obligations from the Social Security Investment Fund, which amounted to 6.67 billion dinars. The Hashemite Kingdom’s internal debt was 12.78 billion dinars last year, while external debt stood at 13.72 billion dinars, Ministry of Finance data show. Unemployment rose to 25 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020, with youth unemployment reaching 55 percent, according to International Monetary Fund data.

The latest statements published by Al Ghad newspaper on its pages, on Tuesday, April 6, indicated the growth of the assets of the Social Security Investment Fund (SSIF) at the end of the year 2020 to 11.2 billion. The growth in assets comes from two sources: The first is transfers of cash surpluses from the Social Security Corporation (the insurance component), which since the establishment of the general fund in 2003 until the end of the year 2020 amounted to about JD4.9 billion, and the second is the profits of the investment activity (the investment part), which since the foundation of the fund amounted to about JD4.7 billion.
